Round 3: Ben Shelton vs. Adrian Mannarino
Louis Armstrong Stadium – Day Session – Second Match
- World No. 6 Shelton has a 14-2 record during this summer's hard-court swing, and is looking to improve on last year's third-round exit at Flushing Meadows when he lost to compatriot Frances Tiafoe in thrilling five-set rematch of their 2023 quarterfinal. He lifted the trophy at Toronto, made a run to the semifinals at Washington, D.C. and reached the quarterfinals at Cincinnati.
- Mannarino is seeking his first Top 10 win at a major—the 37-year-old is 0-22 against the very best at the Grand Slams. His best result this year was a trip to the fourth round in Cincy, where he defeated world No. 16 Tommy Paul before he was bested by world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
- If Shelton wins today's match, he will be the third American man this century to reach the the Round of 16 at each of the four majors in a single season, joining Andre Agassi (2001, 2003) and Taylor Fritz (2024). He would also be the third-youngest American man to advance to that stage at each of the Slams in a single season.
- Mannarino is also on the hunt for his first trip to the fourth round of the US Open, and his sixth time in the Round of 16 in his 61st Grand Slam appearance. The last time he defeated a Top 20 opponent at a major was at the 2023 Australian Open taking down Shelton to reach Round 4 at Melbourne in 2023.
- The Frenchman became the oldest man to break into the Top 20 in the history of computerized rankings when he achieved a career-high of No. 17 in January 2024. Mannarino was in the Top 75 for 12 straight years (2013-2024), and now sits at No. 77.
- Since the start of the 2023 US Open, Shelton is 24-1 against players outside the Top 20 at at the majors, with his only loss coming at the hands of No. 21 Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round of Roland Garros in 2023. He is also 13-0 versus opponents ranked outside the Top 2 at Slams this year, losing to eventual champions No. 1 Sinner in the Australian Open semifinals, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the fourth round at Roland Garros and No. 1 Sinner in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
- Mannarino leads their head-to-head 2-1, having won at Miami in 2023 and the Australian Open in 2024. However, those were three- and five-set wins respectively, while Shelton decisively defeated the Frenchman 6-2, 6-3 en route to the Toronto title earlier this summer.
