Now that the first round is in the books, USOpen.org is tallying up the numbers.
7: Tim van Rijthoven saved seven match points to win his first-round match against China’s Zhizhen Zhang. The Dutchman, who earned his first US Open main-draw win, saved three match points while serving at 5-6 down in the third set, and another four in the third-set tiebreak, before going on to win 3-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(9), 6-1, 6-4.
7: Number of times a player has saved match points en route to winning a US Open singles title. Stan Wawrinka was the last player to achieve the feat, in 2016.
2017: The last time a defending US Open dropped out in the first round, before 2021 champion Emma Raducanu fell to France’s Alizé Cornet in straight sets in Louis Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday night.
21-0: Serena Williams’ record in first-round matches at the US Open. The American icon improves to 78-3 all time in first-rounders across all four Grand Slam tournaments.
Her sister Venus Williams, who dropped her first-round match to Alison Van Uytvanck on Day 2, is 21-2 in first-rounders in Flushing Meadows.
29,402: The new US Open record for an evening session was shattered on Monday night, as 29,402 showed up to take in Serena Williams’ first-round battle against Danka Kovinic. That number, combined with the opening day-session record of 41,930 fans, set the second-highest single-day attendance mark in US Open history: a total of 71,332 people.
6: Number of teenagers who reached the second round of singles at the US Open. Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Coco Gauff, Qinwen Zheng, Leylah Fernandez and Linda Fruhvirtova advanced to the second round out of the 17 teenagers who competed in the main draw.
18: By defeating Jasmine Paolini, 6-3, 6-0, Iga Swiatek completed her 18th bagel set of 2022. Only Serena Williams (25 in 2013) has managed to hand out more bagels in a single season this century.
1935: The last time a Chinese man won a main-draw match at the US Open. Yibing Wu, 22, ended the streak on Day 1, with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 win over Nikoloz Basilashvili. Wu, the US Open boys' singles champion in 2017, became the first Chinese man to win a match at a major in 63 years.
58: Number of players in this year’s US Open women’s singles draw who were not even born when Venus Williams played her first Grand Slam match at Roland Garros in 1997.
0-6: Viktorija Golubic’s career record in main-draw matches at the US Open, after her first-round loss to Jessica Pegula. The talented Swiss, a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist, owns a 1-18 record at the Grand Slams away from Wimbledon, where she is 8-5.
14: Number of players who made their Grand Slam debut at the US Open this year. Of those 14, six—Gijs Brouwer, Brandon Holt and Wu Yibing on the men’s side, and Linda Fruhvirtova, Elizabeth Mandlik and Daria Snigur on the women’s—broke through for their first Grand Slam win. (Peyton Stearns could be a seventh, with her first-round match to be completed on Wednesday due to rain.)
63: Number of consecutive main draws played at the majors by France’s Alizé Cornet. The 32-year-old passes Ai Sugiyama and now holds the all-time record for most consecutive main draws played among the women.
4: Number of Top-10 seeds that lost in the first round in New York. Fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and No.10 seed Taylor Fritz went down on the men’s side. Tenth-seeded Daria Kasatkina and seventh-seeded Simona Halep fell by the wayside on the women’s.
24: Years since Serena Williams played her first match at the US Open. She defeated Nicole Pratt, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, in the first round in 1998 for her first of 107 career wins in Flushing Meadows.
26: Dutchman Tim van Rijthoven cracked 26 aces to lead all men’s singles competitors in Round 1. China’s Qinwen Zheng hammered 21 aces in her three-set win over Jelena Ostapenko to lead the women.
4: Number of men’s singles players who still have a shot to finish the US Open as the No.1-ranked player in the world. Four-time champion Rafael Nadal is in the driver’s set, but defending champ Daniil Medvedev, 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz and Norway’s Casper Ruud are also still in the running.
20-0: Nadal improves to a perfect 20-0 at the Grand Slams in 2022, with his first-round win over Rinky Hijikata of Australia. The 2022 Australian Open and Roland Garros champion went 5-0 at Wimbledon, but had to withdraw before his semifinal match at the All England Club due to an abdominal injury.
6-0, 6-0: The scoreline of Beatriz Haddad Maia’s first-round victory over Ana Konjuh. It could have been closer, but the 15th-seeded Brazilian saved all five break points she faced in the contest.
