In this week’s edition of Hot Shots, we take a look off the court at the tennis stars making appearances at the Oscars, Naomi Osaka’s new coach and Nick Krygios’ killer shot in Acapulco.
On Sunday, the silver screen’s elite honored the year's best movies at the 91st Academy Awards, held in Los Angeles.
Joining the best in showbiz was the best in the tennis biz—Serena Williams.
On Sunday, Serena traded in her tennis togs for a strapless gown, as the former world No. 1 attended the Oscars for the first time and introduced one of the biggest movies of 2018, "A Star is Born."
Serena wasn’t the only US Open champion to enjoy the Academy Award festivities. 2006 women's winner Maria Sharapova also hit the red carpet and was a guest at the Vanity Fair Oscar party.
World No. 29 Grigor Dimitrov joined in on the fun, as well, attending the Vanity Fair party decked out in a Dior suit. Dimitrov has only played two events so far in 2019 due to a shoulder injury. Shoulders aside, nothing was going to stop this Belarusian from vying for best dressed on Oscar night.
While Dimitrov represented the men’s players off the court, on the court, Nick Kyrgios is on quite a roll this week, making waves at the Mexican Open in Acapulco. After dismissing three-time US Open champion Rafael Nadal with some fire shots in the Round of 16, as seen below, and making the crowds roar as he attempted an underhand serve, the world No. 72 ousted 2016 US Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. The mercurial Kyrgios next faces world No. 9 John Isner in Friday night's semifinals.
Like Kyrgios, Naomi Osaka is making waves of her own this week, with the announcement that Jermaine Jenkins will be her new coach. After winning the 2018 US Open, Osaka’s team has seen changes, including parting ways with former Sascha Bajin, former hitting partner to Serena Williams. Osaka’s choice for Jenkins as her new coach didn’t veer that far from her last, as he was formerly Venus Williams’ hitting partner from 2015 until the end of last season. Currently, Jenkins brother, Jarmere, is Serena’s hitting partner. Osaka seems to be keeping it all in the family.
And what better way to celebrate a fresh start with a new coach than with a new hairstyle. Osaka hit them selfie angles and snapped a pic of her fresh new look on Friday.
