Roger Federer is set to return to the US Open this August for a marquee exhibition event. The 20-time Grand Slam champ will be back on court in Arthur Ashe Stadium for ‘Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York’ on the night of Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Federer last competed at the US Open in 2019, but he left an indelible mark in New York more than a decade earlier by winning five consecutive US Open titles from 2004-08—the only man or woman to accomplish that feat.
In celebration of the Swiss legend's upcoming return, we look back at those five trophy runs in photos.
Entering New York as the world No. 1, Federer won his first US Open crown—and his fourth major singles title—by beating Lleyton Hewitt in the 2004 final. It was his third major title of the year after triumphs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
The Swiss repeated in New York by beating Andre Agassi in the 2005 final. Agassi, along with Andy Roddick and John McEnroe, will participate in Federer's US Open exhibition this summer.
Federer beat home favorite Roddick in 2006, three years after the American won the event, to complete his US Open three-peat. The Swiss reached the final at all four majors in 2006, winning them all but Roland Garros.
Federer met Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam final for the first time at the 2007 US Open and defeated the Serb in straight sets. For the second straight year, Federer won the Aussie Open, Wimbledon and the US Open and also finished runner-up at Roland Garros.
The drive for five finished in 2008 with Federer's victory against Andy Murray in the final. After going trophy-less at the opening three majors of the season, Federer's US Open triumph ensured he ended the year with a major crown—extending a streak that began in 2003 and ultimately extended to 2010.
