On Wednesday night, the US Open's reimagined Mixed Doubles Championship presented by Vital Proteins was honored with the Sports Breakthrough Award at the 2026 Sports Business Journal (SBJ) Awards as a result of the event's success and innovation.
The new format featured 16 teams made up of some of the sport's biggest stars, including 13 of the Top 10 WTA and ATP players, competing for $1 million in a condensed two-day event during US Open Fan Week ahead of the main draw. The US Open also partnered with broadcasters around the world, airing across 17 networks in over 170 countries and territories. All mixed doubles matches aired on ESPN linear and digital properties, delivering 13 hours of coverage across ESPN2 and ESPNews, including primetime coverage Wednesday night on ESPN2.
At the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Arthur Ashe Stadium was sold out for both days, and more than 20,000 people scanned their Fan Access Pass to catch the action for free in Louis Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday.
“The USTA has always been known to break barriers and break through and be innovative,” said outgoing tournament director Stacey Allaster, according to SBJ. “One of the most memorable experiences during the 2025 US Open was sitting in the stands during the mixed doubles championship and fans thanking us.”
However, it wasn't just the fans who enjoyed the experience and the electricity of the event. Champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori loved the crowds that packed the stadium.
"I think tonight was amazing. The atmosphere was crazy," Vavassori reflected. "The last match was unbelievable also, the level. I think so many good points, so many highlights."
The event will return in 2026, with matches scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Aug. 25 and Wednesday, Aug. 26.
