Round 4: Coco Gauff vs. Naomi Osaka
Arthur Ashe Stadium — Day Session — Second Match
- In a rematch of their third-round match at the 2019 US Open—Gauff's maiden appearance in the main draw at Flushing Meadows—fan favorites Osaka and Gauff are meeting once again in Arthur Ashe Stadium. This time, the American is a two-time Grand Slam champion, lifting the trophy here in 2023, well-equipped to handle the pressure and expectations. The No. 3 seed was the titlist at Roland Garros and a finalist at Rome and Madrid, hoping to improve on last year's fourth-round exit at the hands of Emma Navarro.
- No. 23 seed Osaka is finding her form once again after maternity leave in 2023, making a run to the final at Montreal and Auckland and notching fourth-round showings at the WTA 1000 events at Miami and Rome. She reached the third round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon for the first time since the beginning of 2022. This is her first fourth-round appearace at a Slam since she lifted her fourth major trophy in Melbourne in 2021.
- If Gauff wins today, she will be the youngest woman to reach 10 major quarterfinals since Maria Sharapova in 2008. Since 2000, only Sharapova (85) has claimed more match wins at the majors than Gauff (74) before turning 22. Additionally, Gauff is 38-2 against opponents outside the Top 20 at Grand Slams since the start of 2023, with both losses coming in the first round at Wimbledon.
- The 2018 and 2020 Queen of Queens owns 13 wins over Top 10 players, most recently defeating world No. 10 Jelena Ostapenko in the third round at Montreal. All of Osaka's seven tour-level titles have come on hard courts—in addition to her four major titles, winning Indian Wells in 2018 and Beijing and Osaka in 2019.
- Among players still in the draw, only Iga Swiatek has claimed more Grand Slam titles (6) than Osaka (4). However, all of Osaka's have come on the hard courts of Melbourne and New York, while Swiatek owns lone hard-court major title, won at the 2022 US Open. In fact, every time Osaka has reached the quarterfinals of a Slam, she has gone on to lift the trophy.
- Gauff currently leads their head-to-head 3-2, winning in straight sets at Beijing in 2024, San Jose in 2022 and the Australian Open in 2020.
