After three action-packed days, the opening round of men's and women's singles play concluded on Tuesday evening at the 2025 US Open. Now that we’re down to 64 men and women in each singles draw, let’s take a look at the numbers that are currently moving the needle in Flushing Meadows.
0: Number of first-serve points lost by Elena Rybakina during her first-round win over American Julieta Pareja. She won all 21 of her first-serve points in the match, and fired seven aces.
1: Both top seeds and defending champions—Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner—advanced in straight sets in Round 1.
2: Number of teenagers to reach the second round of the men’s singles draw: Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik (both 19).
3: Number of players aged 35 or older to reach the second round: Novak Djokovic, Victoria Azarenka and Laura Siegemund.
4: Number of consecutive Grand Slam matches lost by Daniil Medvedev after Sunday night’s five-set loss to Benjamin Bonzi, the longest such streak of his career.
5: Former US Open singles champions in the first round—Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Marin Cilic and Medvedev. Cilic and Medvedev were eliminated.
6: American Madison Keys, the No. 6 seed, was the highest seed to fall in Round 1.
7: Match points saved by Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima, who came back from triple match point down twice to defeat Olga Danilovic on Sunday.
8: Amanda Anisimova’s seed, the 23-year-old’s highest seed at a Slam in her career.
9: Teenagers participating in the women’s singles draw, of which four—Iva Jovic, Mirra Andreeva, Maya Joint and Tereza Valentova—advanced.
10: 38-year-old Gael Monfils was defeated in five sets by Roman Safiullin on Court 5. It was the Frenchman’s first opening-round defeat in Flushing Meadows in ten years, since 2015.
11: Grand Slam singles wins notched by Amanda Anisimova, which is more than her previous single-year best of 10.
13: The highest seed to fall in round one on the men’s side was No.13 Daniil Medvedev.
22: Jannik Sinner’s hard-court winning streak at the majors hit 22 with his win over Czechia’s Vit Kopriva.
23: Number of serve-and-volley attempts made by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in Round 1—more than any other player. The Frenchman won 16 of those 23 points during his four-set loss to Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti.
28: Aces struck by Hamad Medjedovic, the most of any player through one round.
25: US Open appearances made by Venus Williams, the all-time record. The 45-year-old lost to 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova in three sets in the first round, but she’s still here for doubles.
48: Americans that competed in the singles first round (25 men and 23 women).
52: Diane Parry’s 6-1, 6-0 victory over Petra Kvitova was the fastest completed match of Round 1 in Flushing Meadows at 52 minutes. Mirra Andreeva’s 6-0, 6-1 thrashing of Alycia Parks was the only other completed match to come in under an hour at 55 minutes.
61: Games played by Hamad Medjedovic and Daniel Altmaier over the course of their four-hour and 46-minute tussle on Court 13. It ended two shy of the all-time record for games played in a single US Open match in the tiebreak era.
The two matches that share the current record are: Novak Djokovic d. Radek Stepanek, 6-7, 7-6, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6, in a match lasting four hours, 44 minutes (R2, 2007), and John Lloyd d. Paul McNamee, 5-7, 6-7, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6,, in a match lasting three hours, 56 minutes (R2, 1979).
65: By defeating Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, 6-1, 6-2, on Tuesday, Iga Swiatek broke the Open Era record for consecutive opening-round matches won (including round robin events), which was previously held by Monica Seles. Per the WTA, Swiatek's last opening-round loss was at the 2021 WTA Finals in Guadalajara to Maria Sakkari.
142: Speed of the fastest recorded serve in round one – struck by Argentina’s Federico Agustin Gomez during his four-set loss to Jack Draper.
4:46: Altmaier and Medjedovic played the longest match of round one. Altmaier came through, 7-5, 6-7(3), 7-6(7), 6-7(5), 6-4.
