Two-time US Open champion Venus Williams returned to Flushing Meadows to face No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium. Williams showed off some of her classic play but it was not enough to overcome the two-time US Open semifinalist's form. Muchova advanced to Round 2, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
