WHAT HAPPENED: Fresh off her Cincinnati title last night, Iga Swiatek joined her doubles partner Casper Ruud in Arthur Ashe Stadium for Round 1 of Mixed Doubles. The No. 3 seeds only needed 39 minutes to swiftly beat Americans Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe, 4-1, 4-2.
In the first set it was all Swiatek and Ruud. The Polish/Norwegian duo got off to a very fast start by taking care of their service games with little trouble, and breaking the American duo during Tiafoe’s opening service game.
With a few flashy points mixed in, Swiatek and Ruud’s flawless play proved to be too much for the American duo as they took the first set 4-1.
The Polish/Norwegian duo continued to dominate in the second set, dampening the energy that Keys and Tiafoe were trying to pump into their game and the American crowd.
Service troubles continued for Tiafoe as he conceded his only service game in the second set, which proved to be costly for the Americans as Swiatek and Ruud grabbed a 2-1 lead.
Keys did her part to keep the American pair in it at 3-2, but Ruud’s service game was tough to crack during the match as he quickly served out the match.
WHAT'S NEXT: Winners will face the American/Italian duo Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti in the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
