Hold the phone—Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend are reigniting their mixed doubles partnership for the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship.
The American compatriots made headlines during the 2023 US Open, where they reached the mixed doubles semifinals. Fans relished in their electric rallying and on-court charisma—as evidenced by their shared on-court celebrations, which included Townsend adopting Shelton’s iconic ‘hang up the phone’ hand gesture.
Separately, the American stars have already had quite a year. Townsend, a force in the doubles world, took home her second Grand Slam doubles title at the 2025 Australian Open with partner Katerina Siniakova. She and Siniaková also made it to the quarterfinals at this year’s Roland Garros, as well as the semifinals at Wimbledon in July. In mixed doubles, she and Evan King made it to the championship final, but fell to Italian pair Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.
And Shelton has cheered her on every step of the way. He gave the 29-year-old a shoutout on Instagram when she earned her maiden doubles title at Wimbledon in 2024. He also left her some kudos in the comments of an Instagram post highlighting her 2024 US Open run, where she made the semifinals in doubles and reached the mixed doubles final with Donald Young.
In turn, Townsend has had plenty of opportunities to praise Shelton. The 22-year-old is fresh off a Wimbledon quarterfinals appearance, bumping him to world No. 9. Shelton had just made his Top 10 debut in June, when he jumped from No. 12 to No. 10 after landing his first grass-court semifinal in Stuttgart. With world No. 4 Taylor Fritz and No. 8 Tommy Paul also in the Top 10, Shelton’s ascension marked the first time three American men were in the elite group since Andre Agassi, James Blake and Andy Roddick in April 2006.
“Proud of you my bro,” Townsend reportedly wrote on her Instagram story after Shelton made the Top 10.
Since joining the pro circuit in the second half of 2022, Shelton has focused on his singles game, showing significant promise in such a nascent career. While he’s dabbled in doubles, his only Grand Slam mixed doubles experience has been alongside Townsend. And if 2023 was any indication, the left-handed duo enjoys sharing the court.
“This is the most fun we’ve had on the tennis court in a while,” said Shelton after their quarterfinals win at the 2023 US Open.
But there’s always more fun to be had, and odds are, Shelton and Townsend will answer the call—this dynamic duo is sure to be dialed in.
