Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina teamed up to win the Indian Wells mixed doubles exhibition tournament in March. This August, their partnership will be tested under considerably higher stakes at the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship.
Fritz is currently focused on winning his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, where he will face fellow US Open mixed doubles participant Carlos Alcaraz in the semis. His next chance to play for a major trophy will come later this summer alongside 2022 Wimbledon singles champ Rybakina—and the American loves their chances to finish first in the star-studded field.
“I think I'm a bit of a mixed doubles specialist, I'm not going to lie,” Fritz said at the start of Wimbledon. “I think my record in mixed doubles kind of speaks for itself. In United Cup, I don’t think I ever lost a mixed match. I've won the Indian Wells [mixed doubles exhibition] twice. I think that for whatever reason, I enjoy playing mixed doubles. It's good for me."
Fritz doubled down on his confidence by calling himself and Rybakina "one of the teams to beat" in New York, also mentioning Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend as well as Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa among the top duos.
"To be honest, there's so many good teams and good players," Fritz said. "But I don’t know, I just randomly, in mixed doubles, tend to do well."
Fritz's best competitive doubles result came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, when he reached the quarterfinals alongside Tommy Paul for Team USA. Rybakina reached the Roland Garros doubles quarters alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in 2021, her best Grand Slam doubles showing, and cracked the WTA's doubles Top 50 that season.
While Fritz's doubles triumphs in Indian Wells (with Rybakina in 2025 and Aryna Sabalenka in 2023) came amidst smiles and laughs in an exhibition setting, he is expecting heated competition in New York.
Asked about the competitive level he will bring to the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship, Fritz did not mince words: "Oh extreme, extreme, 100%," he said. "I think everyone is going to be like that, to be honest. I think everyone really wants to win. It's going to count as a real Grand Slam. The prize money is great. We are 100% there to try and win it.”
