Jannik Sinner and Emma Navarro are both through to the final week at Wimbledon in July. In August, the singles stars will team up during the first week of the US Open to compete in the new-look Mixed Doubles Championship in New York.
The pair met for the first time last week at the All England Club, and their partnership is already off to a winning start—at least on the singles court, where both players have looked sharp in advancing to the Wimbledon fourth round.
Sinner has one ATP Tour doubles title to his name (Atlanta 2021 with Reilly Opelka), while Navarro has won 28 professional doubles matches and cracked the WTA's doubles Top 100 in 2024. Last year in Indian Wells, she won the Eisenhower Cup mixed doubles exhibition tournament with Ben Shelton—who is signed up to compete in New York with Taylor Townsend.
Despite their immense talents, both Sinner (the reigning US Open men's singles champion) and Navarro (a women's singles semifinalist last year in New York) downplayed their doubles skills this week.
"I'm very happy to play with Emma. I told her already to not get pissed at me with my very good volleys," Sinner joked. "In doubles I struggle. Let's see."
Despite his modesty, Sinner will enter the tournament as the ATP Tour's world No. 1—a fact Navarro is well aware of, judging by her comments.
"I’m excited. I think it’s going to be fun. I've got to hold up my end of the bargain on my half," she said. "I'm going to have a lot of pressure and a lot of expectations to live up to out there. I know he's going to be hitting clean forehands and backhands left and right, and aces all over the court. It'll be great."
Keeping with the light-hearted nature of their new partnership, Navarro joked on Tennis Channel about how their team was formed: "He was begging me to play," she deadpanned. "He was saying, 'I heard about your volleys and your doubles skills. Please, please, will you play with me?' I said, 'Yeah, sure, I guess I’ll play with you. You’re not the best player, but I’ll make an exception and try to get a better partner next year.'"
However it came about, the stage is set for the brand new pairing to play for a Grand Slam title at this brand new event in New York.
"I'm very excited. It's something new. I think it's very exciting for the fans to see something different," Sinner said. "The best singles players playing doubles is always something fun to watch. The teams are very, very high level."
