If you’ve been enjoying the off-court banter between Frances Tiafoe and Madison Keys, then you won’t want to miss the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship. The American singles superstars are joining forces for this year’s reimagined mixed doubles event, which will take place during Fan Week (the first week of the US Open).
While this competition marks their debut as a mixed doubles team, they certainly aren’t strangers. Tiafoe and Keys competed together for the U.S. at the 2023 United Cup, where they both held No. 2 singles spots and helped lead their nation to victory. Their friendship on the team was clear, with Tiafoe cheekily asking for Keys’ autograph after one of her wins.
That camaraderie has since extended to playful encounters beyond the court. For instance, Tiafoe affectionately refers to Keys as “Mom” for her perceived longevity, despite only a three-year age difference between the two. However, Keys tosses it right back, jokingly telling Tiafoe not to text her during the 2025 Australian Open in January, since she has historically lost matches after receiving his texts of well wishes. Clearly, Tiafoe must not have messaged her, since the world No. 6 left Melbourne with her first Grand Slam singles title.
Tiafoe and Keys, respectively, haven’t competed in mixed doubles at the US Open in years. The last appearance for world No. 13 Tiafoe was in 2018, when he and fellow American Whitney Osuigwe entered the Open as wild cards. Keys last played mixed doubles in Flushing in 2022, alongside compatriot (and now-husband) Bjorn Fratangelo. Neither team made it far in their appearances.
Now, with the event occurring during Fan Week instead of alongside the singles main draw, more high-profile players are taking the opportunity to join the mix.
While it wasn’t clear who Tiafoe or Keys would potentially partner with for mixed doubles at the US Open, Tiafoe’s girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield, had a couple suggestions. In a recent interview with Tennis Channel, Broomfield was asked if she would consider trying to get a wild card with Tiafoe in US Open mixed doubles, given her pro tennis background and NCAA doubles title. Her response aged well.
“I think it would be fun, but I really would love to see him play with like Madison Keys or Coco [Gauff],” Broomfield said. “I think that would be really cool, just to see that synergy come together.”
It looks like she got her wish. Now, the only question is whether Keys will let Tiafoe text her before their match.
