The US Open is always getting bigger and better, finding new ways to innovate and engage the amazing fans who flock to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and who follow the tournament from afar.
One of the biggest updates for 2025 is the Mixed Doubles Championship, which will now take place over the course of two days during the first week of the three-week US Open—often known as Fan Week. This is a change from the past, when the mixed doubles matches were played during singles main draw competition, enticing some of the world’s top singles players to join in on the fun as they compete for a Grand Slam title and a $1 million purse.
When & where to catch the action
The event will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 19 and Wednesday, Aug. 20, with play beginning on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. ET, while Wednesday’s matches will start at 7:00 p.m. ET. Unlike past years, the entire tournament will take place on stadium courts—both Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong will host play on Tuesday, and the semifinals and final will be played under the lights in Ashe on Wednesday evening.
Introducing a unique tournament format
The US Open Mixed Doubles Championship will consist of best-of-three set matches with sets up to four games and no-ad in games that reach a score of deuce (40-all), meaning that the winner of the next point wins the game. If each team has won four games in a set, a tiebreak will be played. If the teams split sets, a 10-point match tiebreak will be played in lieu of a third set. The first team to win 10 points, with an advantage of two or more points, will win the match.
The final will be a best-of-three set match with sets up to six games, no-ad, and a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set if teams split sets. If teams split games in a given set, they will play a tiebreak.
Shorter tournament, smaller draw
There will be 16 teams total in the draw. Eight teams will receive direct entry based on their combined singles rankings and 8 teams will receive wild cards. For example, if Player 1 is ranked World No. 21 and Player 2 is ranked World No. 7, they have a combined ranking of 28. If Player 3 and Player 4 have a combined ranking of 53, they will rank behind Player 1 and Player 2. Teams with the eight highest combined rankings will receive direct entry into the tournament, while eight more teams will receive wildcards.
