There was just one match on the order of play Sunday, the final day of the 2024 US Open, and it proved worthy of its standalone status. In the men's singles title tilt, Jannik Sinner held off a third-set charge from American Taylor Fritz to win the trophy with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 victory in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The world No. 1 Italian was at his best in the clutch moments of each set, winning the final four games of the first and third and also breaking in the final game of the middle frame. Fritz grew in confidence in set three and fired cannonball forehands at every opportunity, but Sinner used his range to neutralize those attacks. On the exchanges where Sinner started on the back foot, he often finished on the front, utlimately finishing first for for a sweep of this year's hard-court majors.
Sinner did not lose a first-serve point in sets two and three (28/28 combined), but Fritz capitalized on his opponent's 40% first-serve make rate in the final stanza to make his biggest push of the match. The American, spurred on by "USA" chants from the Ashe crowd, scored his first break since the second game of the match to lead 4-3 in the third, turning the volume to max with winners at net to cap consecutive rallies of 10 and 12 balls.
Fritz battled through deuce to hold for 5-3, but would not get as far as deuce again as Sinner snapped off four straight games to secure the victory.
