An exciting quarterfinal round of men's and women's singles play concluded Wednesday evening at the 2024 US Open. Now that we’re down to four men and women in each singles draw, let’s take a look at the numbers that are currently moving the needle in Flushing Meadows.
1: Number of unseeded players into the singles semifinals at the US Open this year: 52nd-ranked Karolina Muchova.
2: Number of Top 5 players that reached the semifinals at the US Open: No. 1-ranked Jannik Sinner and No.2-ranked Aryna Sabalenka.
3: By defeating Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Jannik Sinner becomes the third Italian to reach a US Open semifinal in the Open Era, along with Corrado Barazzutti (1977) and Matteo Berrettini (2019).
3: By defeating Alex de Minaur to reach the semifinals, Jack Draper becomes the third player to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open without dropping a single set, joining Pablo Carreno Busta (2017) and Greg Rusedski (1997).
4: Active American men that have reached Grand Slam semifinals. Taylor Fritz defeated Alexander Zverev to join Frances Tiafoe (2022 US Open and 2024 US Open), Tommy Paul (2023 Australian Open) and Ben Shelton (2023 US Open).
Four is also the number of Americans into the semifinals at the 2024 US Open: Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.
5: Number of Top 5 wins Karolina Muchova has achieved at the Grand Slams. Muchova (5-1) is tied with Martina Navratilova for the most Top 5 wins in her first six matches against the Top 5 at the Slams in the last 40 years (her only loss came to World No. Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros 2023).
6: Number of male players born in the 2000s that have advanced to a semifinal at a Grand Slam. Jack Draper became the sixth on Wednesday with his win over Alex de Minaur. He joins, Carlos Alcaraz (6), Jannik Sinner (3), Felix Auger-Aliassime (1), Lorenzo Musetti (1), Ben Shelton (1).
7: In her seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal, Jessica Pegula finally broke through to reach her first major semifinal with a 6-2, 6-4 win over World No.1 Iga Swiatek.
8: Draper becomes the 8th British man to reach a Grand Slam semifinal in the Open Era, and the first at the US Open since 2012.
9: Number of months missed due to wrist surgery by Karolina Muchova. The World No.52 injured her wrist at last year’s US Open, and didn’t return to the tour until June of this year.
10: ATP players that reached the semifinals of the US Open without dropping a set at the last 20 editions of the tournament.

2005: Fritz and Tiafoe will contest the first all-American men’s singles Grand Slam Semfinal since Andre Agassi defeated Robby Ginepri at the 2005 US Open.
2006: The winner of the Fritz-Tiafoe semifinal will become the first American US Open finalist since Andy Roddick in 2006.
2009: The winner of the Fritz-Tiafoe semifinal will become the first American Grand Slam finalist since Andy Roddick in 2009 at Wimbledon.
2017: For the first time since 2017, four American girls are into the quarterfinals of the girls’ singles tournament – Annika Penickova, Iva Jovic, Valerie Glozman, Tyra Caterina Grant.
