Day 6 of the 2024 US Open continued to produce some competitive men’s, women’s and mixed doubles matches. Many of the seeded teams across all three events, including the defending men’s and women’s double champions and No.1 seeds, were tested and points away from defeat, but in the end, many managed to come out victorious on Saturday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Defending men’s doubles champions and No. 3 seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury continue their quest for a four-peat as they beat Lloyd Glasspool and Rinky Hijikata, 6-3, 7-6(11).
The defending champions in the women’s doubles draw are also safely through: No. 1 seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe beat American Catherine Harrison and Alicja Rosolska, 7-5, 6-4.
No. 1 seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos also kept their US Open hopes alive, winning in straight sets over Alexander Erler and Matwe Middlekoop, 6-3, 7-6(5).
There were three women’s doubles upsets: After dropping the first set, Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls beat the No. 16 seeds Ena Shibahara and Aldila Sutjiadi, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. American Asia Muhammad and her partner Heather Watson beat the No.13 seeds Giulana Olmos and Alexandra Panova in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.
The biggest upset in the women’s doubles draw today came from Anna Danilina and Irina Khromacheva, who beat the American duo and No. 4 seeds Caroline Dolehide and Desirae Krawczyk, 6-3, 6-4. There are now only three of the top five seeds left in the women’s doubles draw.
Four all-American teams managed to move on including wild cards Taylor Townsend and Donald Young, who beat Nadia Kichenok and Hugo Nys, 7-5, 6-4. Another wild-card duo, Tristan Boyer and Emilio Nava, came from a set down to beat Julian Cash and Robert Galloway, 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-4. No. 13 seeds Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow came back from a set down to overcome French duo Jonathan Eysseric and Fabrice Martin 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
In mixed doubles, the all-American duo of Tyra Caterina Grant and Aleksandar Kovacevic beat Alycia Parks and Jackson Withrow in a tight match tiebreak 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.
