Day 5 of the 2024 US Open was jam-packed with highly competitive men’s, women’s and mixed doubles matches, with many filled with tiebreaks, match tiebreaks, and some even going for nearly three hours.
The third day of mixed doubles action saw the highly popular and much anticipated pairing of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa, more commonly known as “Tsitsidosa” on Court 11. Lined to the brim with spectators, the Spanish-Greek duo managed to keep the scoreline close, but ultimately fell short to the experienced doubles pairing of Giuliana Olmos and Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico, losing 7-6, 6-4.
As for American Shelby Rogers, she played the final two matches of her career today. She first played her final women’s doubles match with Petra Martic, then her last mixed doubles as a wildcard with fellow American Robert Galloway. Rogers and Martic lost to Jaqueline Cristian and Angelica Moratelli in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, and then the American mixed doubles wildcards lost in a tight match tiebreak to No. 3 seeds Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, 2-6, 6-3, [11-9].
As for the biggest upset so far in the women’s doubles draw, Harriet Dart and Diane Parry took out reigning Olympic Gold medalists Errani and Jasmine Paolini in three sets.
Finland’s Harri Heliovaara pulled double duty on Court 7 today. He first won his men’s doubles match with Henry Patten in straight sets. A couple of hours later, he and mixed doubles partner Anna Danilina kicked off their mixed doubles title defense as they upset the No.1 seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Joe Salisbury rom a set down, winning 4-6, 7-6, [10-8].

Australian Open men’s doubles champions Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden continue their quest for their maiden US Open title. They handily beat Roberto Carballes Baena and Federico Coria, 6-2, 6-4 in Round 2.
Three American duos moved onto their respective next rounds. Sofia Kenin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands won in straight sets against Maia Lumsden and Anna Siskova, 6-2, 6-1. Mixed doubles Maria Mateas and Mackenzie McDonald came back in the match tiebreak to win their first round mixed doubles, 6-4, 2-6, [10-8]. Taylor Townsend and Donald Young also captured a Round 1 win over fellow American Asia Muhammad and Andres Molteni, 7-5, 6-0.
The other two seeded upsets happened in Round 2 of men’s doubles play including the Indian-French duo Yuki Bhambri and Albano Olivetti coming from behind and beating the No.15 seeds Austin Krajicek and Jean-Julien Rojer, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. As for the Portuguese pair Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral, they beat the No. 12 seeded Polish pair Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski, 7-6, 6-4.
