Fan-favorite veterans Diego Schwartzman and Richard Gasquet are among the big men's names in the 2024 US Open Qualifying Tournament—and the two stars could meet in the play-in tournament's final round.
Qualifying play is scheduled this Monday through Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center, with 16 main-draw places on offer for those who can earn their way in with three victories. The men's and women's qualifying draws were released Sunday, showing each player their path to the main event.
Schwartzman will open against Italy's Andrea Pellegrino and cold face top qualifying seed Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round. Gasquet, seeded 23rd, will play American Denis Kudla in the opening round. Should both Argentina's Schwartzman and France's Gasquet progress for the third round, they will square off for a place in the main draw.
The 32-year-old Schwartzman, now ranked world No. 230, has not missed a US Open since he made his main-draw debut in 2014. A quarterfinalist in 2017 and 2019, he was beaten by Arthur Rinderknech in the New York first round last year. The Argentine has been knocked out in qualifying at each of the previous three Grand Slams this season. By missing the 2024 Australian Open main draw, he ended a streak of 36 consecutive major main-draw appearances.
Gasquet, 38, has not competed on hard courts since he was beaten in Dubai qualifying in February. He is bidding this week to secure a place in the US Open main draw for the 20th straight season. The Frenchman reached the fourth round in his 2005 debut and has since made the semifinals in 2013 and the quarters in 2015.
Gasquet went 1-2 at the year's first two majors, beating Borna Coric as a wild card on home soil at Roland Garros, but fell in the final round of qualifying at Wimbledon.
A grand total of 18 Americans also dot the qualifying draw: Kudla, Emilio Nava, Nishesh Basavareddy, Jack Kennedy, Patrick Kypson, Brandon Holt, Mitchell Krueger, Ethan Quinn, Tristan Boyer, Eliot Spizzirri, Martin Damm, Aidan Mayo, Michael Zheng, Kaylan Bigun, Maxime Cressy, Nicolas Moreno De Alboran, Bruno Kuzuhara, J.J. Wolf.
