Exactly 364 days after Carlos Alcaraz triumphed over Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-setter at the 2023 Wimbledon final, the Spaniard repeated his impressive feat—this time, in straight sets. The crowd on Centre Court was rapt with attention as the reigning champion lost three championship points at 5-4 in the third set, but Alcaraz regained his composure to finish out the match several minutes later, 6-2, 6-2, 7-5(4).
With this win, he became the sixth man in the Open Era to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back, and the youngest to ever raise those trophies in a calendar year. If that wasn't enough, Alcaraz is now the second man in the Open Era to win his first four singles finals at Grand Slams, joining Roger Federer.
These accomplishments earned praise from other players on the ATP and WTA tours, including recently-retired compatriot Garbine Muguruza and his fellow 2022 US Open champion, Iga Swiatek.
Tennis greats also chimed in to celebrate the 21-year-old's victory. Billie Jean King and Rennae Stubbs, who have claimed titles of their own at the All England Club, cheered on the young champion and his massive success on grass.
Former player Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, who won the US Open title in 2009, 13 years before Alcaraz lifted the trophy in 2022, sent along his congratulations.
Arsenal Football Club, a top Premier League soccer team, made sure to congratulate Alcaraz on his ability to defend his Wimbledon title, especially against one of the greatest tennis players of all time.
And of course, the four majors had to chime in to celebrate the four-time Grand Slam champion, who only has to lift the trophy in Melbourne in order to complete a career Grand Slam.
We can't forget the Prince and Princess of Wales!
