On the final day of the 2024 Australian Open, Jannik Sinner made history as the youngest player since Novak Djokovic in 2008 to lift the trophy. The Italian only dropped one set on his run to the final, and beating five seeded players, including fellow Top 5 athletes Djokovic, Andrey Rublev and finalist Daniil Medvedev. He mounted an impressive comeback against Medvedev, winning the match despite being down two sets.
Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek, two fellow Grand Slam champions in his age group, sent their congratulations through the screen to welcome Sinner into the exclusive major winner's circle.
Stan Wawrinka—the most recent Melbourne champion who was not a member of the Big Three—chimed in as well, accompanied by Rafael Nadal, Big Three legend and two-time AO winner.
Other players on the ATP and WTA tours also gave kudos to the newly-crowned champion, led by fellow Italian Martina Trevisan.
Australian tennis icons Rod Laver and Rennae Stubbs cheered for the trophy-lifter, and congratulated Daniil Medvedev on his strength and stamina during the match and throughout the tournament, while Billie Jean King toasted the newest Grand Slam champion.
Sinner has reached the quarterfinals or better at all four majors, and each tournament made sure to celebrate the beloved player and his achievement.
And of course, Sinner’s superfans, the Carota Boys, were thrilled by their favorite player’s win after they completed their own Grand Slam by attending all four majors.
