Semifinals: Coco Gauff vs. Karolina Muchova
Arthur Ashe Stadium — Night Session — First Match
- Reaching her first US Open singles final would be no surprise to No. 6 seed Gauff, who came to New York City on a hot streak: She won two titles, in Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati, coming in, and with five wins here, has now won16 out of 17 matches since her first-round loss to Sofia Kenin at Wimbledon. Since a loss in the Montreal quarterfinals to eventual champion Jessica Pegula, Gauff has extended her winning streak to a career-best 10 victories.
- Meanwhile, this is No. 10 seed Muchova’s third time playing the semifinals of a Grand Slam. The first time she reached the semis was at the 2021 Australian Open. She was the runner-up at Roland Garros earlier this year, and is a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist. However, this is her best result at the US Open—her previous best result in Queens was the fourth round back in 2020. Three of Muchova's seven career semifinals has reached at tour-level have now been at Grand Slam events.
- Both players are bidding for their second career Grand Slam singles final. Both were runners-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros: Gauff last year and Muchova this year.
- Gauff and Muchova only met once—in the Cincinnati final just 18 days ago. Gauff won the match 6-3, 6-4, but acknowledged in a press conference here in New York that Muchova was struggling physically during that match. "I don't think that will be the case again if I were to play her just because there is a day in between," Gauff said. "I'm going to approach it differently, honestly."
- Muchova was very complimentary of her semifinal opponent during her post-match press conference after beating Sorana Cirstea in the quarterfinals. “She's very athletic. She never gives up. Runs for every ball. Doesn't [make] many mistakes. So she has kind of all the strokes. So very, very good player from all the aspects,” Muchova said. Since 2000, Muchova is the second Czech woman to reach the US Open semifinals, along with 2016 finalist Karolina Pliskova.
