On Day 8 of the 2023 US Open, the juniors continued to take over the outer courts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, showing all visitors the future of tennis. Thirty-two boys’ and girls’ singles matches were played, showcasing 64 players, as well as 16 doubles matches.
The longest match of the day lasted a whopping 3 hours and 48 minutes. The eventual victor was Danil Panarin, who defeated American wild card Cyrus Mahjoob in three (very long) sets, 7-6(2), 3-6, 7-6(5). Panarin faced 15 break points throughout the match, but managed to save nine of them, and fired off 51 winners. This was the 18-year-old’s third time reaching the second round of a junior Grand Slam—he has previously won three junior ITF titles in 2021. His next opponent will be qualifier Pavle Marinkov, who defeated No. 13 seed Joel Schwaerzler and will also be making his second round debut at a junior Slam.
On the other end of the spectrum, No. 7 seed Joao Fonseca of Brazil secured his spot in the third round in 57 minutes, beating Patrick Schoen, 6-3, 6-2. He dialed in during the points that mattered, winning all four of his break point opportunities and saving three of the four he faced. Fonseca is a three-time junior Grand Slam quarterfinalist, reaching the quarters at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon earlier this year.
The No. 1 seeds continued to move through the draws today, with Yaroslav Demin taking down Hayden Jones, 7-6(1), 6-4, and Renata Jamrichova winning 6-1, 6-1 over Nanaka Sato. Demin was the runner-up at the 2023 Junior Championships at Wimbledon, and has won two junior ITF titles on clay courts.
Jamrichova, 16, holds four junior ITF titles and is currently the No. 3 junior girl in the ITF rankings. She lost in the semifinals at junior Wimbledon to Clervie Ngounoue. Earlier this year, Jamrichova reached the third round at Roland Garros and the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
In the next round, she will face Nikola Bartunkova, who defeated Italian qualifier Noemi Basiletti, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. The Czech was the runner-up to Ngounoue at Wimbledon and claimed two junior ITF titles this summer.
The Americans also had a successful day in Flushing Meadows, with nine players advancing: Valerie Glozman, Kaitlin Quevedo, Aspen Schuman, Victoria Osuigwe, Cooper Williams, Nishesh Basavareddy, Alexander Frusina, Darwin Blanch and Adhithya Ganesan.
