Matteo Berrettini has provided fans with an update on the injury that ended his 2023 US Open campaign.
The former Top 10 player was forced to retire from his Round 2 match against Arthur Rinderknech on Thursday when he rolled his right ankle playing a point on Court 5. Berrettini was trailing Rinderknech 6-4, 5-3 in the best-of-five-set match when the injury occurred.
For now, Berrettini says, his update is that he's waiting on an update.
"Certainly not the way I hoped my US Open would end," the 2019 US Open semifinalist wrote in an Instagram post. "I have been working closely with medical experts since I left the court. We are now waiting for scan results to determine the best next steps."
The injury is the latest in a litany of physical problems for the former Wimbledon finalist over the last year-plus. Last year, he had surgery on his right hand, and this year, he was sidelined for much of the clay-court season (including Roland Garros) due to an abdominal injury.
But in New York, the fan-favorite former world No. 6 was at his brilliant best in a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 29 seed Ugo Humbert in the opening round, before his campaign was cut short.
When he left Court 5 after retiring against Rinderknech, the US Open faithful sent him off court in a hearty round of applause.
"Thank you very much for all the kind messages," the Italian signed off. "I will provide a further update soon."
