The quad division at the 2023 US Open Wheelchair Championships presented by Deloitte will expand to a historic 16 competitors, one of two notable updates to the competiton at the year's final Grand Slam.
This latest development marks the third year in a row that the US Open has expanded its wheelchair field. Last year, the inaugural US Open Junior Wheelchair Championships were held, and the men’s and women’s divisions were doubled to 16 competitors. In advance of the 2021 US Open, the quad field was doubled in size from four to eight competitors.
The latest expansion means that now all three adult divisions—men’s, women’s and quad—will each have 16 competitors in the singles field and eight teams in the doubles field at the 2023 tournament.
In addition, longtime wheelchair tennis volunteer and administrator Jennifer Edmonson has been named the new US Open wheelchair tournament director. For more than 25 years, Edmonson has been involved with the ITF Super Series Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge, La., one of the most prestigious events on the ITF/UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour—and has been tournament director for 20-plus of those years. Beyond her role with the Cajun Classic, Edmonson is a member of the ITF Wheelchair Committee and is in her third term as chair of the USTA National Wheelchair Committee.
A licensed physical therapist by trade, Edmonson was recognized as Wheelchair Tennis Champion of the Year by Racquet Sports Industry Magazine last year for her service to the sport.
The 2023 US Open main draw will be played from Aug 28 through Sept. 10, with wheelchair competition slated for the second week.
