Twenty-time Grand Slam singles champion Roger Federer announced on Thursday that he intends to retire from professional tennis at the conclusion of next week's Laver Cup in London.
In a lengthy social media message, Federer reflected on his three-decade career and thanked many, including his peers: "I was lucky enough to play so many epic matches that I will never forget," he wrote.
"We battled fairly, with passion and intensity, and I always tried my best to respect the history of the game. I feel extremely grateful. We pushed each other, and together we took tennis to new levels."
They responded in kind: Almost immediately, the tributes rolled in, from everyone including Federer's biggest rivals to his counterparts on the WTA tour.
Calling Federer "my friend and rival," Rafael Nadal wrote in part: "I wish this day would have never come. It’s a sad day for me personally and for sports around the world. It’s been a pleasure but also an honor and privilege to share all these years with you, living so many amazing moments on and off the court."
Later, Novak Djokovic added: "Roger, it’s hard to see this day and put into words all that we’ve shared in this sport together," he wrote on Instagram. "Over a decade of incredible moments and battles to think back on. Your career has set the tone for what it means to achieve excellence and lead with integrity and poise. It’s an honor to know you on and off court, and for many more years to come."
