Matteo Berrettini ended the run of former champion Andy Murray by coming through a tough battle in Arthur Ashe Stadium, 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-3.
Berrettini’s big serving attacking style of tennis was the key to his success.
The player with the higher In Attack percentage has won 71% of matches at this year's US Open. Berrettini added to this stat today, hitting 24% of his shots from an attacking situation, compared to 19% from Murray.
In Attack shows the percentage of shots played in attack by both players (championship average 23%).
The key to Berrettini gaining such an attacking advantage was his serving dominance. Berrettini had a first serve percentage of 69%, with an impressive average first serve speed of 125 mph.
When a player is in attack more than their opponent, it is important they convert those attacking opportunities. Despite the renowned Murray defense, Berrettini used his big forehand to achieve a Conversion Score of 62% (51/82).
With Berrettini in this kind of form, he is once again a contender for the US Open title.
