Rafael Nadal is coming to the nation's capital.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion will make his return to the tour in four weeks at the ATP 500-level Citi Open in Washington, D.C., part of the US Open Series.
The Spaniard has accepted a wild card for his tournament debut, joining a star-studded field that currently includes Wimbledon semifinalists Denis Shapovalov and Hubert Hurkacz, former champion Nick Kyrgios, rising stars Jannik Sinner, Sebastian Korda and Felix Auger-Aliassime, and former Grand Slam finalists Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori.
The event is expected to be Nadal's first tournament apperance since losing in the semifinals of the French Open in May, having withdrawn from both Wimbledon and the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
“I am very excited to come to Washington for the first time,” Nadal said in a tournament press release. “I have never been there and it’s one more place I wanted to come and play. I am looking forward to playing again and Washington shall be the best start for the U.S. summer swing for me.
"[I'm] looking forward to seeing again my U.S. fans that I haven’t seen since I won the 2019 US Open in NYC! Vamos!”
After a year's hiatus, the tournament returns to the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center this summer from July 31 through Aug. 8. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit citiopentennis.com/.
