Watch on YouTube: Serena Williams vs. Venus Williams, 2002 US Open women's singles final
The 2002 US Open capped a four-year run of dominance by the Williams sisters at their home Grand Slam, with Serena and Venus sweeping the women's singles titles in New York from 1999. After Serena defeated world No. 1 Martina Hingis to win the '99 Open (her first major title), and Venus topped Lindsay Davenport to lift the title in 2000, the sisters squared off in the championship round in both 2001 and 2002.
Venus won in 2001, their first meeting in a major final, to claim her second straight US Open crown. In 2002, they met again, this time as the Top 2 players in the world. Serena, the world No. 1, lived up to her billing with a dazzling display in victory.
It was Serena's second US Open title, and her fourth major singles title. Her 2002 title also served as the third leg of the "Serena Slam," with the American holding all four major singles titles simultaneously after she claimed the 2003 Australian Open title four months later.
Serena would again accomplish that feat from 2014-15, when she won all four Slams in a row, beginning with the 2014 US Open.
