With the current suspension of the ATP and WTA Tours, we are opening up our US Open vault to bring you full match videos of classic encounters through the years in New York.
Watch on YouTube: Caroline Wozniacki vs. Maria Sharapova, 2010 US Open women's singles fourth round
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki more than lived up to her billing in the early stages of the 2010 US Open, winning her opening three matches at the cost of just three games, including a double-bagel victory in Round 2.
Maria Sharapova, seeded No. 14, escaped a three-setter in Round 1 but advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-0 win of her own, over American wild card Beatrice Capra.
This 2010 matchup was the third career meeting between Wozniacki and Sharapova, and their first meeting at a Slam. Their career head-to-head finalized at 7-4 in favor of the Russian, including encounters at the 2014 US Open (Wozniacki) and the 2019 Australian Open (Sharapova). Five of their last six matches, and each of the last four, went the distance.
Wozniacki would maintain her impeccable form at the 2010 US Open, topping Sharapova in straights before dismissing Dominika Cibulkova in the quarterfinals. The Dane did not drop a set in New York until her semifinal defeat against No. 7 seed Vera Zvonareva.
With world No. 1 Serena Williams absent from the 2010 US Open with a foot injury, Wozniacki's semifinal run helped propel her to the WTA No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career in October 2010.
The complete fourth-round match will be available to watch Thursday on the US Open YouTube channel. For a coming attraction, view the match highlights below.
