With the current suspension of the ATP and WTA Tours, we are opening up our US Open vault to bring you full match videos of classic encounters through the years in New York.
Watch on YouTube: Monica Seles vs. Jennifer Capriati, 1999 US Open women's singles fourth round
Both Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati had extended hiatuses from the WTA Tour in the mid-1990s—for very different reasons—but were well established in their respective returns by the 1999 US Open.
At the 1991 US Open, Seles defeated a 15-year-old Capriati on her way to her maiden New York title. Eight years later, with Seles now playing under the American flag at age 25, she repeated that result in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The No. 4 seed handled her unseeded opponent in straight sets, improving her perfect record to eight sets won, eight sets played for the tournament.
Seles extended that streak to nine sets, when she took the opener against Serena Williams in the quarterfinals, but she would fall victim to a three-set comeback bid by the eventual champion.
Seles and Capriati met again in the US Open Round of 16 the following year, with Seles again advancing in straight sets.
The complete '99 fourth-round showdown, along with scores of other great content, is now available to watch on the USTA YouTube channel.
