Watch on YouTube: Amelie Mauresmo vs. Jennifer Capriati, 2002 US Open women's singles quarterfinals
A two-time Grand Slam champion and International Tennis Hall of Famer, Amelie Mauresmo never lifted the women's singles trophy in New York. But the Frenchwoman's remarkable consistency at the US Open played a big part in her spending 39 weeks as world No. 1 across 2004 and 2006—good for 12th on the all-time list of weeks at No. 1 since the WTA's computerized rankings began in 1975.
From 2001-06, Mauresmo reached the quarterfinals or better each year in New York. In '02, she advanced to the final four for the first time after a comeback quarterfinal victory against hometown favorite Jennifer Capriati.
Seeded 10th, Mauresmo managed two straight come-from-behind wins to reach the semis that year. She edged No. 7 seed Kim Clijsters in the Round of 16 before her meeting with No. 3 Capriati in the Arthur Ashe Stadium sunshine. Battling past the New York City native and a partisan crowd, Mauresmo reached her second successive major semifinal, matching her run at Wimbledon earlier that summer.
She got back to the semis in 2006, before retiring in 2009, her final match coming at the US Open. Immediately following her playing career, Mauresmo began coaching at the professional level. She has worked with former world No. 1 players Andy Murray and Victoria Azarenka, and currently coaches countryman Lucas Pouille.
