Watch on YouTube: Monica Seles vs. Chanda Rubin, 2000 US Open women's singles third round
Americans Monica Seles and Chanda Rubin met five times on the WTA singles tour, with each of the first three meetings coming at the Grand Slam level. After Seles won the first two meetings, in the 1996 Australian Open semifinals and the 1998 French Open Round of 16, the pair finally faced off at their home Slam after the turn of the century.
Two-time US Open champ Seles swept their career head-to-head, 5-0, but three of those meetings went to a deciding set, including at the 2000 US Open.
That third-round matchup was filled with attacking intent from both women, lasting one hour, 37 minutes over three competitive sets. Fittingly, Seles advanced after ripping a trademark two-handed forehand winner on match point.
Seles, who was born in former Yugoslavia but began representing the U.S. in 1994, advanced to defeat Jennifer Capriati in the Round of 16, before being turned back by world No. 1 Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals. Venus Williams took out Hingis in the semis and claimed her first US Open title by beating Lindsay Davenport in an all-American final.
The complete third-round showdown, along with scores of other great content, is now available to watch on the USTA YouTube channel. For a coming attraction, watch the highlights below.
