Roger Federer announced Wednesday that he will miss the remainder of the 2020 season as he recovers from a right knee injury.
The five-time US Open champion had an initial surgery in February, following his semifinal run at the Australian Open, but will now require an additional minor procedure after he suffered a setback.
In his statement, Federer referenced a similar injury layoff in 2016, when left knee problems led him to end his season after reaching the Wimbledon semis. The Swiss returned in 2017 to win both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and appears to have every intention of repeating that sort of success in this next comeback.
Should Federer return in January 2021, it will be 11 full months since his last competitive match—a laboring, three-set loss to Novak Djokovic in Melbourne.
