Watch on YouTube: Martina Hingis vs. Monica Seles, 2000 US Open women's singles quarterfinals
This 2000 US Open quarterfinal featured two tennis legends with 14 Grand Slam singles titles between them. By the turn of the century, Martina Hingis had already won all five of her Slams (including the 1997 US Open), and Monica Seles had won all nine of her major trophies (including in 1991 and 1992 in New York). But these were still two women at the top of their games, world No. 1 Hingis vs. No. 6 seed Seles.
Hingis was just 20 years of age, having filled up her trophy cabinet as a precocious teen. Seles, 26, had won eight of her nine Slam titles as a teen before a 1993 stabbing attack tragically sidelined her in her prime.
The Swiss Miss cruised to the quarterfinals, dropping just 10 total games in the first four rounds, while Seles survived a three-set scare from fellow American Chanda Rubin in Round 3 before battling past No. 14 seed Jennifer Capriati in another all-U.S. matchup in the Round of 16.
Hingis maintained her sparkling form against Seles, racing through a 6-0 opening set before the American asserted herself in set two. But it would be too little, too late, as the Swiss advanced to her fifth of six consecutive US Open semifinals. She would fall to eventual champion Venus Williams in the final four.
Seles was in the midst of a unique streak that saw her exit at the quarterfinal stage of five consecutive Grand Slams between 1999 and 2001 (and eight out of 10 from 1999-2002). She played her last match at the 2003 French Open, where she lost in the first round for the first time at a Grand Slam while struggling with a foot injury, and officially retired in 2007.
Hingis, whose singles career ended in 2007, continued to play doubles through 2017. At the 2017 US Open, her final major, she won both the women's doubles (with Yung-jan Chan) and mixed doubles (with Jamie Murray) titles, and soon after returned to No. 1 in the WTA's doubles rankings. She ended her career with a combined 25 Grand Slam titles.
