Watch on YouTube: Lindsay Davenport vs. Serena Williams, 2000 US Open women's singles quarterfinals
After winning the 1999 US Open as an 18-year-old, Serena Williams cruised to the 2000 quarters without dropping a set as the No. 5 seed. Lindsay Davenport, seeded second, also enjoyed a smooth run into the last eight, save for a first-set hiccup against an unseeded Kim Clijsters in Round 2.
Williams and Davenport met in singles competition 14 time in their careers (Williams holds a 10-4 lifetime edge), including four straight years in New York, from 1999-2002. Their first meeting came in the '99 semis, with Williams advancing in three sets before defeating world No. 1 Martina Hingis in the final.
Williams won three of their four US Open meetings, but 2000 belonged to the veteran. Davenport first ended Williams' perfect run of eight sets won, then ended her tournament and title defense as she continued on her path to the final. In the championship match, Venus Williams gained a measure of family revenge by knocking off Davenport to win the first of her two consecutive US Open crowns.
For Davenport, it was part of a remarkable 10-year run (1997-2006) in which she reached the quarterfinals or better each year at the US Open, including winning the title in 1998. Williams has reached the semifinals or better in each of her last 10 US Open appearances dating back to 2008, though the six-time champ did not compete in 2010 (foot injury) or 2017 (pregnancy).
