Watch on YouTube: Caroline Wozniacki vs. Maria Sharapova, 2014 US Open women's singles fourth round
Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova retired within 35 days of each other in the early part of 2020, with the Dane ending her career at the Australian Open and the Russian saying goodbye in a Vanity Fair essay in February.
Both former world No. 1s, they met 11 times in their careers between 2008-19, with Sharapova winning seven of those matches. But it is Wozniacki who got the better of this rivalry in New York, sweeping the pair's two US Open meetings in 2010 (when she was world No. 1) and 2014 (as the No. 10 seed). After their first five meetings—and six of their first seven—were decided in straight sets, their 2014 US Open fourth-round showdown started a run of four straight three-setters to close the series.
Sharapova, seeded No. 5, entered as the more in-form player, with a French Open title already on her 2014 resume. Wozniacki, meanwhile, was mired in a Grand Slam slump, failing to advance beyond the Round of 16 at a major since the 2012 Australian Open.
That changed in New York, where Wozniacki would go on to reach the 2014 final. She could only be stopped by her good friend, a dominant Serena Williams, who completed a US Open three-peat with the victory.
The full Wozniacki-Sharapova showdown will premiere Sunday on the US Open YouTube channel. For a coming attraction, check out the match highlights below.
