Originally scheduled to be played on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the 2011 US Open men's singles final was delayed to Monday, Sept. 12, due to heavy rains earlier in the tournament. Novak Djokovic took the court in an FDNY cap to commemorate the occassion, and donned the blue hat again during the trophy ceremony.
With Djokovic, the world No. 1, facing off against world No. 2 Rafael Nadal, the stage was set for a classic encounter in this rematch of the 2010 US Open final. And they certainly delivered, with four hours, 10 minutes of elite-level tennis in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The Serb came into the encounter on a five-match winning streak against his lefty opponent, and would eventually extend that run to seven in a row, including consecutive wins at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. All seven victories came in finals.
But entering the match, Nadal was the defending US Open champ, having defeated Djokovic in the 2010 final. The current reigning champ, Nadal also defeated Djokovic in the 2013 US Open final. He leads their New York head-to-head, 2-1, with all three meetings coming in the championship round, and lasting four sets.
