Watch on YouTube: Serena Williams vs. Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 2015 US Open women's singles third round
Before Serena Williams was shocked by unseeded Italian Roberta Vinci in the 2015 US Open semifinals, she survived another upset bid from compatriot Bethanie Mattek-Sands in Round 3.
Both women came into the match with three Grand Slam titles on the year: Serena's all coming in singles, with Mattek-Sands winning two in women's doubles (with Lucie Safarova) and one in mixed (with Mike Bryan).
Williams entered the tournament with the "Serena Slam" in tow, holding all four Grand Slam trophies concurrently, and was vying for the first calendar-year Grand Slam since Steffi Graf completed her Golden Slam in 1988. It was the second time Williams held all four Slams, having previously accomplished the feat from 2002-03, starting with the French Open.
Mattek-Sands, a wild card, was into the third round in New York for the first time, after topping Coco Vandeweghe in Round 2. A former doubles world No. 1, with women's and mixed doubles titles at every Grand Slam except Wimbledon, she was four years removed from her singles career-high ranking of No. 30 in 2011.
The underdog was two games from glory in Arthur Ashe Stadium, but Williams roared back with her back against the wall at 5-all in the second set, an unstoppable late flurry keeping her Grand Slam hopes alive.
The complete third-round showdown, along with scores of other great content, is now available to watch on the USTA YouTube channel.
