Watch on YouTube: Marin Cilic vs. Kei Nishikori, 2014 US Open men's singles final
Two surprise finalists competed for the US Open men's singles title in 2014 after a pair of semifinal giant-killings. Marin Cilic took out No. 2 seed Roger Federer in straight sets with a dominant display of power tennis, while Kei Nishikori grinded past world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in a four-set thriller.
That set up an unlikely championship match between the No. 14-seeded Croat Cilic and the No. 10 seed Japanese Nishikori. It was a contest of contrasting styles, with Cilic's big serving and laser groundstrokes dueling against the all-court game and steady play of Nishikori.
It was the first Grand Slam final appearance for both men—making this the first major title match between final debutants since the 2005 French Open (Rafael Nadal def. Mariano Puerta). It also marked the first Grand Slam final without a member of the "Big 4" since the 2005 Australian Open (Marat Safin def. Lleyton Hewitt).
The complete final is now available to watch on the US Open YouTube channel. For a coming attraction, view the match highlights below.
