With the current suspension of the ATP and WTA Tours, we are opening up our US Open vault to bring you full match videos of classic encounters through the years in New York.
Join us Saturday at 4 p.m. ET for the latest #USOpenClassics on Facebook Live and Twitter. Next up in the series is a full-match live stream of the 2012 final between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. The full match will be posted on Sunday on the US Open YouTube Channel.
It was never going to be easy for Andy Murray. In 2012, entering his fifth Grand Slam final, Murray had seen only two opponents across those championship matches: Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, twice each. It was Djokovic again across the net in his second US Open final.
The Scot had won just one set in his previous four major finals, when he took the opener against Federer at Wimbledon in 2012 to lead for a fleeting moment. After that match, he addressed his home crowd in his famous "getting closer" speech through tears on Centre Court.
On that same hallowed ground, just one month later, Murray won the biggest honor of his career to date, as he turned the tables to defeat Federer in straight sets in the Olympic gold-medal match. He then carried that form into New York, reaching the final with the loss of just three sets in six matches.
Against Djokovic, the then-25-year-old came out sharp and won two tight sets, including the longest tiebreak in US Open final history, to put himself on the brink of glory.
But it was never going to be easy for Andy Murray.
His Serbian opponent showed his championship pedigree by leveling the match, leaving a do-or-die fifth set for the trophy.
It took four hours, 54 minutes—tying the 1988 final between Ivan Lendl and Mats Wilander for the longest in US Open history—but Murray ultimately came good to become the first Brit to win a major since Fred Perry in 1936.
