Five-time US Open champion Roger Federer has been confirmed to play for Team Europe at the 2020 Laver Cup in Boston, the event's official website announced on Friday. The Swiss has helped captain Bjorn Borg's European squad win the cup in each of the competition's first three years, in Prague in 2017, Chicago in 2018 and Geneva in 2019.
The 2020 competition will be held at Boston's TD Garden from Sept. 25-27, with tickets available at 10 a.m. ET on Friday, March 6, via Ticketmaster.
“I’ve never been to Boston and I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the sights and playing tennis in front of their great fans” said Federer, who is currently recovering from recent knee surgery.
“The Laver Cup is like nothing else in world tennis and I’m sure playing in a city that loves its sport as much as Boston does, the atmosphere is going to be unreal."
Team World, captained by John McEnroe, will be eager to use that home-court advantage to lift the trophy for the first time.
“Each year gets tougher for Team Europe to hold back Team World," added Federer, "and Boston will be a whole new ball game.”
The three-day team competition will feature six of the best players from Europe taking on six of the best from the rest of the world in singles and doubles action, with the full rosters to be announced closer to the fall event. Previous participants have included Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios.
One of the most unique and star-studded events on the tennis calendar, Laver Cup promises international intrigue and drama at tennis' top level.
