Semifinals: No. 5 Daniil Medvedev (RUS) vs. Grigor Dimitrov (BUL)
Evening Session: First match in Arthur Ashe Stadium
• Many tennis observers expected world No. 5 Daniil Medvedev to get this far at the 2019 US Open, but how many thought his semifinal opponent would be Grigor Dimitrov, who came into the fortnight ranked No. 78? Dimitrov shocked the world with his five-set victory over third-seeded Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. Medvedev was a four-set winner over former US Open champ Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.
• Wawrinka (No. 23) was the only seeded player that Medvedev has faced during the fortnight. Dimitrov was also set to face No. 12 Borna Coric in the second round, but Coric had to withdraw.
• The 23-year-old Medvedev entered the Open on a roll. He was named the US Open Series men’s breakout player, as he reached the finals of the Citi Open and Rogers Cup before winning the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Still, his Open run has been his best showing at a Grand Slam event. Previously, his best showing was a fourth-round effort at the 2019 Australian Open.
• Dimitrov, meanwhile, has been this far in previous Grand Slams. The 28-year-old was in the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2014 and again at the 2017 Australian Open.
• Medvedev and Dimitrov have met twice, both times in 2017. They split those two meetings, with Medvedev winning on hard courts and Dimitrov winning on grass.
• Since April, Medvedev has won six of his eight matches against Top 10 opponents, including victories against each of the "Big 3," Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Federer.
• While Medvedev hails from Moscow and Dimitrov from Bulgaria, both players have called Monte Carlo, Monaco home.
