No. 1 Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. No. 23 Stan Wawrinka (SUI)
Evening Session: Second match in Arthur Ashe Stadium
- This Round-of-16 match will be the first meeting between Djokovic and Wawrinka since they played in the 2016 US Open final. Wawrinka won that match, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3, as the tournament's No. 3 seed. Since then, the pair have shared the court in doubles, when they teamd up at Queen's Clun in 2018.
- Djokovic has been head-and-shoulders above the rest of the ATP in the last 14 months, starting with his 2018 Wimbledon title after his return from elbow surgery. But a new injury has troubled him recently, a left shoulder problem that has affected his serve and backhand in New York. Nonetheless, the Djoker has cruised through his first three matches this fortnight without dropping a set.
- Wawrinka, who is missing just Wimbledon for a career Grand Slam, is the last man outside of the Big 3 to win a major. After being limited by a knee injury from 2017-18, the Swiss is back to contending at the majors. He contested a Grand Slam final in four straight years from 2014-17, and flashed that same sort of form this spring in reaching the French Open quarterfinals.
- Sunday's showdown will be the pair's 25th ATP meeting. Djokovic leads the head-to-head, 19-5.
