Welcome to this week's edition of "Hot Shots," a USOpen.org-curated look at what you may have missed on social media over the past seven days. The first week of the US Open main draw provided plenty of entertainment, both on and off the court.
The US Open is tennis' grandest stage, with the backdrop of New York's famous atmosphere, energy, restaurants and nightlife. At the last Grand Slam of the season, everyone is striving to end with a bang.
While the tennis is serious and intense, there are always plenty of lighter moments at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Check out some of the funniest moments we’ve seen on social media in Week 1:
Andrea Petkovic had a unique post-match victory celebration on Thursday. We’ve seen it all this week: fist pumps, kisses, screams and more. But this time, Petkovic flexed and flashed her abs to the crowd.
Roger Federer, in his post-match interview on Saturday, claims that his success has brought him joy. He admits that it’s not enough to just love tennis and get your "butt" kicked every day. Life would be nice if we all had Fed’s tennis abilities, wouldn’t it?
Café latte for Ms. Venus Williams gone wrong. A ball person in Louis Armstrong Stadium runs over to deliver but Williams was on her way for a bathroom break. Careful Venus, players only get one bathroom break during matches now. Drink with caution.
Elina Svitolina cracks a joke during her “On the Clock” feature. Svitolina was asked to name something she is really bad at. Her answer (with a big laugh:): "Tennis!" If that’s so, the rest of the world is doomed.
American wild card Kristie Ahn tells us the story of how she finally “made it” at the 2019 US Open, after some fan interaction after her doubles match on Saturday afternoon.
While Daniil Medvedev has proven to be one of the more controversial players of the 2019 US Open--at least according to the Louis Armstrong Stadium fans--he dances his way into the quarterfinals. Is he playing some sort of reverse psychology on the New York crowd? Not sure, but it seems to be working for him.
This is simply a feel-good moment between No. 1 Naomi Osaka and America’s sweetheart, Coco Gauff. It was great to see the strong sportsmanship between the two youngsters, as tennis was celebrated on Saturday night’s session with hugs, applause and tears.
This one has gotten a lot of buzz. A female fan sitting behind Feliciano Lopez admires his shirtless look as she slowly and “secretively” takes out her phone to snap some pics. Little did she know she would be the one that ended up in the photos all over the internet.
