Immediately upon its introduction last year, the new Louis Armstrong Stadium became a favorite showcase in its own right; a clear winner for both fans and players alike. Armstrong proved itself a second stage that is second-to-none, its 14,053 seats providing fans a more up-close and personal view of their favorite stars. At the same time, those stars discovered a very special energy in the intimacy that helped them to raise their respective games in some classic confrontations.
“What an incredible atmosphere,” said 2017 US Open finalist Kevin Anderson after playing in Armstrong last year. “It was incredibly exciting; it felt like in a coliseum almost, constant noise going on the whole time. The crowd was really into it, and it was really exciting playing in those sort of conditions.”
The electricity inside Armstrong figures to get amped up early in 2019, as it’s slated to host some of tennis’ best and most exciting players during the first two days and nights of competition. On Monday, women’s No. 3 seed Karolina Pliskova, two-time US Open champ Venus Williams and rocketing Russian Daniil Medvedev headline the Armstrong day session, while 2016 US Open champ Stan Wawrinka and 2017 finalist Madison Keys light up the night on Louie’s great stage.
Tuesday, it’s Greece’s surging star Stefanos Tsitsipas, Wimbledon champ Simona Halep and teen phenom Coco Gauff on the daytime marquee, with two-time US Open finalist Victoria Azarenka and Aussie Nick Kyrgios—always a Flushing fan favorite—in the evening-session spotlight.
“It’s an unbelievable court,” American John Isner said last year after his Armstrong experience. “The atmosphere is like a jungle—it was amazing. The new Armstrong court is very special.”
