Martina Hingis has her eyes set on two titles, and will get a chance to win both this weekend at the US Open.
The 36-year-old advanced to both the mixed doubles and women's doubles finals on Friday, following a 6-4, 7-6 win with partner Jamie Murray against Coco Vandeweghe and Horia Tecau in the mixed semifinals and .a 6-4, 6-4 win with partner Yung-Jan Chan over Sania Mirza and Peng Shuai in the women's doubles semis.
"," Hingis said. ""
Hingis and Murray, who won mixed doubles at Wimbledon in July, will play Hao-Ching Chan and Michael Venus, who defeated Anastasia Rodionova and Oliver Marach 6-1, 7-6. The championship match will be played Saturday in Arthur Ashe Stadium prior to the women's singles final between Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.
"You think we are going to tell you?" Hingis said when asked about the secret to her succes with Murray. "We're always there when it really matters and I think today. they had a few opportunities ... but we still came back and won. We've been there, we've won titles and we know how it's done."
Hingis and Murray didn't drop a set at Wimbledon but it's been tougher getting to the title match here, needing the super tiebreak to advance in two of their four wins thus far. On Friday, they needed to win a second-set tiebreak in which Vandeweghe and Tecau had five set points but were unable to convert. The pair had their chances throughout the match, but only converted one of 13 break points.
"I told Jamie he carried me pretty much throughout the match for a set and a half. I got broken (at 4-3 in the second set) and said, 'maybe it's really time to play now.' He did great."
"There's nothing nicer than actually fighting to be in the final so I'm pretty happy we managed to get through," Hingis said.
Hingis is a five-time singles Slam singles winner, and 12-time women's doubles winner. She's also won six mixed doubles titles including the 2015 US Open. She'll play in the mixed final on Sunday.
Murray has won two men's doubles titles (2016 Australian Open, US Open), and the 2007 Wimbledon mixed doubles title.
"Picking the best partner," Murray said of the secret to his success with Hingis. "We've played a lot of great stuff. Here we fought really hard and staved off some set points. I'm looking forward to the final tomorrow."
"To get the opportunity to play with her has been awesome for me. ... It's a great chance for me to win tournaments so it's been a no-brainer for me."
The winning team in Saturday's mixed doubles championship will split $150,000. The losing team will split $70,000. The winning women's doubles team will split $675,000.
