On Sept. 7, 1991, 17-year-old Monica Seles won a battle of the ages, defeating 34-year-old Martina Navratilova, 7-6, 6-1, to win her first US Open women’s singles title.
The victory made Seles the third-youngest women's singles champion of the Open era, trailing only 16-year-olds Tracy Austin and Martina Hingis, while a victory for Navratilova would have made her the oldest women's winner of the Open era.
The matchup was also the last time two left-handers squared off for a US Open singles title.
Seles would repeat her title in 1992 before her career was interrupted when she was stabbed during a match in Hamburg, Germany. She returned, after the stabbing, to US Open finals in 1995 and 1996.
For Navratilova, the 1991 title match marked the last of her eight US Open women's singles finals, with titles in 1983-84 and 1985-86 to offset losses in 1981, 1985, 1989 and 1991.
