On Sept. 10, 2006, Roger Federer became the first man to win Wimbledon and US Open crowns for three straight years when he fought off Andy Roddick in the men’s singles final, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
In the stands were Roddick’s new coach, Jimmy Connors, and golf great Tiger Woods, who attended as a guest of Federer’s and celebrated with him in the locker room afterward.
Federer would go on to a fourth consecutive Wimbledon-US Open double in 2007 before Rafael Nadal finally broke his run in 2008 by taking the Wimbledon crown. The Swiss, however, would rebound to win the US Open later that year for a fifth consecutive championship in New York.
