On Aug. 26, 1986, Andre Agassi made his US Open debut as a 16-year-old, falling to Jeremy Bates, 7-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the first round. The two-time champion (1994, 1999) would not not miss a US Open through his retirement in 2006, a string of 21 consective appearances that is tied with Martina Navratilova for the longest such streak in the Open era.
Agassi's debut was overshadowed on this day, however, by four-time champion John McEnroe suffering his first and only first-round loss at the US Open. McEnroe was upended by Paul Annacone, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. The New York native would rebound to reach the quarterfinals in 1987 and the semifinals in 1990.
